This book is focused on commercial aircraft design, based on the experience accumulated by the author while working for large OEMs in Europe and the US. It combines academic approaches with hands-on tools and methods used in the industry to design aircraft that are fit for their markets. In this sense, the book is best suited for experienced designers who, on one side, are looking for a summary of well-known methods selected for the challenge of designing commercial aircraft, and on the other hand, want all that combined in one handy book instead of having to browse through hundreds of pages of classic aircraft design books and databases to find what they are looking for. I especially appreciate the up-to-date data collection for modern airliners like the A380, A350, and the B787, the details on wing and configuration design of these aircraft, and the modern layout with informative illustrations and great jet photos.
For me, having worked in fighter design for the last 20 years, it was a great reminder of my days in the commercial aircraft design world, and I'm happy to see that Zarir realized his vision to collect and document all the methods and best practices he uses in our industry in a book that I now have the pleasure to review.
Jochen Dornwald, Aircraft Designer
Finally! A book that provides a holistic glimpse into the world of modern commercial jet aircraft design from the perspective of a leader in the industry. It leverages current and relevant knowledge that is rarely accessible and provides pragmatic guidance to the (aspiring) commercial jet aircraft designer. The author skillfully articulates how a successful commercial jet is a carefully calculated balance of compromises on a global scale. What truly sets this book apart from other aircraft design textbooks is that it provides real guidance to a commercial jet designer that is specific to this field, rather than generic. The author highlights commercial, technical, and infrastructure complexities the modern jet aircraft designer must consider that aren't necessarily prevalent in other parts of the aviation industry, but also make the commercial jet industry such an interesting arena to develop a career in. The book demonstrates a logical progression from the importance of a well-thought-out market strategy and arrives at an aircraft configuration that balances relevant trade-offs of each major component to create an integrated solution. This book is written in a manner that appeals to professionals in the aviation industry as well as enthusiasts. It will be on my desk and will help inspire the next generation of designers.
